The Oxford English Dictionary defines pleasure as "A feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment" and in all honesty we could leave the review of Nathan O'Regan's new single there and it would be complete, but some of you might consider that a little bit unprofessional. This is a toe tapping sing-a-long anthem by a songwriter at the very top of his game.
Our only complaint with Nathan is that we do not hear new music often enough. Moving closer is the follow up to 2017's Like never before and it has been a seeming eternity between these two releases. We don't mean to gush this hard but the vein of songwriting this man is going through is purely captivating.
Most of the magic in 'Moving Closer' is in the arrangement and the production. For anyone has seen Nathan live knows that he is a powerhouse on the stage, whilst maintaining some truly delicate moments. What is impressive is just how well this is captured in the single. Quite often nuance and layers of complexity can be compressed out of a recording. This song has it in spades. The production quality is near perfect, and there are a massive number of tracks used to accentuate the song and bring the emotions of the story being told in waves. From offbeat keyboard hanging chords to the (presumed synth) following closely the bass guitar to add more complexity. All elements move in the tightest fashion to the drums and it is evident the greatest amount of thought has gone into the arrangement.
Nathan's vocal never strays off the path, rising and falling with the song and breaking in the right way, at the right time, the descant chorus is a perfect evolution and contrasted with the delicate opening lines just works. The lyrics are used to paint a complete and emotive story that is delivered equally through the words and the delivery of the same.
The song rises and falls with purpose, the quiet chorus before the crescendo is apt and the song builds with a beautiful menace. The stops and starts are there to the benefit of the song. Really we do not have the superlatives that are required to describe the quality of this song. Buy it. Now preferably and support an astounding musician so that we don't have to wait as long for the next song.
